Bordeaux, France













 My 6.5 hr BlaBlaCar ride into Bordeaux was long but fun conversation with my driver who wants to work in USA. I made a 25€ mistake by reserving the hostel on the same day. Oh, well this new and trendy hostel is right next to Renaissance Hotel on the rich/left side of La Garnonne River so cost me 44€ a night. I will move to the almost as trendy hostel of 19€ (yet not as wealthy neighborhood) tomorrow. 


The 1st thing after dropping my bag was to sign up a wine testing tour via the tourist office. These major wineries do not take individuals walking in as in Porto, Portugal. I also asked info to get to a nearby town for the day after tomorrow. 





Bordeaux is often referred to as "Little Paris". As a seasoned traveler, I checked out almost all sites, such as Place de la Bourse and the Water Mirror, Bordeaux Cathedral (St Andrew Cathedral), Quinconces Square, Victory Arch, Girondins memorial, etc., on both banks of the river, and I will sleep in tomorrow morning to take things easy and enjoyed this high-end hostel (most expensive bed I ever paid in 71 countries i travelled)

This was my 1st international trip after COVID. I thought EU would have universal COVID travel restrictions; however, its members have constitutionally changing and different rules for people visiting from different countries (EU or non-EU).  I have been monitoring the rules to modify my routes; nevertheless, it was a little challenging to comply with the different COVID travel restrictions among these countries, yet I dealed with one country at a time. I got the 3rd Pfizer shot before leaving USA,  booked a day 2 PCR test for UK, a pre-entry PCR test for Morocco , and a pre-entry PCR test in Morocco to enter USA.  The plan of wash off my USA label in Portugal/France for over 14 days, then getting into other EU countries that ban people entering from USA worked well. I traveled during September - November, 2021 to Portugal -> Monaco -> France -> Luxembourg   ->   Belgium -> Netherlands -> UK -> Morocco, and back to USA safe and sound. ...

Bordeaux Tours

 I took a free walking tour to get some history of Bordeaux by an Irish guide who has perspective of French living for today (that was different from what a native French lady took the tour). I also saw one marker of the French pilgrim trail towards the Camino de Santiago. Even the gate has a statute pointing his hand to the destination: the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain.  After the tour, I checked the inside of the Oprea House, went back to the Bar a Vin Ecole du Vin Bordeaux to get a glass of 2€ 2020 Rose (subsidized by the government), and ran into the French tour taker by accident. We had a nice chat before going separate ways.  I took local bus to a winery Château du Taillan (run by the 5th generation 5 sisters）to take an English tour at 4 pm and made a new friend, a Mexican exchange student taking 2-day trip from Paris. Gaia, across the river from Porto

 After 12 days, I am church and palace out, so my focus was touring wineries on Gaia (across the river from Porto), and checking out famous stores such as Cafe Majestic, McDonald Imperial, etc.  I walked across the famous Ponte Dom Luís I Birdge to the overlook at the monetary Miradouro da Serra do Pilar, then the top to the river front then walked up to an abandoned castle for an overlook.  I was very impressed by the river front codfish pastel store of Pastel de Bacalhau Com Queijo da Serra da Estrela, which was nicely decorated, with pastel making by a chef on site, as well organ performance. I did not pay 2.5€ for a small piece in the fancy store.  I waited until dinner at Cafe Almada to have three  鳕鱼饼 （Pastel de Bacalhau） with side dishes for 4€. This Portuguese salt cod fritters are made with salt cod, potato, onion, and parsley and then fried. Another highlight was fado performance in one of the wineries.
